Wow! But Gretchen, had your mother been any different (and those were her fears) you would not have written such an amazing memoir. But that "said fall", tho it happened anyway, is it safe to say you picked yourself up and dusted yourself off? From what I know about you, I think YES!

Wow. That is stunning. That's a graduation speech. So different from my mother. She was terrified of my determination to go to the big, bad university, sure that I would fall into a den of iniquity. Which didn't say much for her confidence in her and my dad's parenting. Just saying. I wanted what your dad wanted for you. I went. I did not take said fall. That came later.
